E-cigarettes May Help You Quit Smoking

By Pamela O'Connor

Recent studies in New Zealand have shown that smoking electronic cigarettes may help quitting faster than nicotine patches or gum. The E-cigarettes help to reduce smoke pollution and provide a healthier way to smoke. They have become increasingly popular among all smokers and non-smokers.
Studies of about 657 people were chosen to either use patches or the E-cigarettes to see how much they cut down on their nicotine intake. Over a period of 6 months, 57 percent of people using the E-cigarette halved their intake while only 41 percent of people using the patch did the same. Only 5.8% of nicotine patch users quit smoking by six months. For the e-cigarette smokers, the numbers were 7.3%.
It is clearly very hard to quit altogether, as nicotine is an extremely addictive drug. New Zealand makes it more attractive to quit smoking, as health services that help people quit get paid for. Also, E-cigarettes are fully regulated and sold in pharmacies, which is not true in America. E-cigarettes most likely will be regulated in the U.S. because of how much money they can make and how big the electronic cigarette market is becoming.
Electronic cigarettes will be a huge advantage to all smokers because they deliver only nicotine- that, of course, is not healthy as well. However, it does not have any of the chemicals that can kill smoker’s lungs. It also does not have any second-hand smoke or sneaks into ventilation systems to kill innocent non-smokers. There is still much to learn about electronic cigarettes, and we are excited to see their progress.
